Our Filipino culture is teeming with arts, traditions and indigenous knowledge that constionstitute the narrative of our people. The integration of the Filipiniana the native, crafts, literature, folk stories, and cultural practices into the education system has potential of generating more relevant and colorful learning experienceriences for the students. It enables them to relate academic concepts to their lives and gain a stronger appreciation for what it is to be Filipino.

Why Use Filipiniana in Schools?

In one research done over six months in Los Baños, the teachers and students used Filipino-based materials (folk stories, traditional arts, local crafts) while teaching science and math. The results were inspiring: Students reported feeling more excited and weregetting more out of the work, and they saw the work as having connectedctions to their own lives.

The use of Filipiniana makes it easier for them to relate ideological concepts to something concrete as an example, the scientific process, or the patterns in math. Or imagine studying the life cycle of a frog by listening to a local story, learning more from traditional art, rather than just the pages of an illustrated book. This type of learning is vibrant, compelling, and unforgettable. It also instills Filipino pride while making children more conscious of their roots. 

Challenges to Bringing Filipiniana into the Classroom

Of course, integrating local culture is not without its challenges. Some teachers believe they do not have enough information or resources about traditional arts and heritage. Culturally responsive lesson planning can be hard work, as it requires additional preparation and support, and so without this help, consistency can be a challenge.

Though such difficulties may be surmounted. Additional training programs, relationships with cultural organizations and support from school administrators will make the process of integrating Filipiniana easier and more enduring.

Why Celebrate Filipiniana?

Besides its educational uses, Filipiniana keeps and advances the national identity. Western ways often hide local customs in the current global setup. Because of this, stressing Filipino arts and culture renews pride in our background. The mass media frequently promotes global values instead of local ones. So, adding Filipiniana to school courses balances this, which helps children value their origins.
